Thornhill might best be described as a 24,000 acre natural playground. For those who love and appreciate and wish to bond with nature, it is a rare find indeed. While the Great Karoo consists of vast open plains, valleys and mountains, Thornhill is unique in that it combines all these features in one property.
Thornhill has a pollution free semi-arid climate (similar to Colorado). At the Bush Camp, the perennial river boasts fish and crabs, prey of the fascinating clawless Cape River Otter. Both Vereaux Black and Marshall eagles also make Thornhill their territorial home. At last count, nine mating pairs' nests were found perched on our sheer cliffs.
In general, animal life is plentiful on Thornhill's mountains and plains. (Plains game is currently estimated at 4,000 animals!) Some of the more common species include:
Springbok, Kudu, Eland, Blesbuck, Blue Wildebeest, Black Wildebeest, Red Hartebeest, Impala, Southern Mountain Reedbuck, Grey Rhebbuck, Klipspringer, Oryx, Blue Duiker, Waterbuck, Duikers (Red and Grey), Steenbuck, Hyrax, Burchells Zebra, Bushbuck, European Fallow Deer, Wild Ostrich, Guinea Fowl, Egyptian Goose, Lynx, Leopard, Jackal, Meerkat, and the shy Eagle Owl. (And, a herd of sixteen very tame Giraffe.)
Game viewing is one of our guests' chief delights. For qualified drivers of our ATV Quadbikes, it is also available on an intimate basis. (The ATV's are very easy to handle.) Guests also enjoy rambling through our varied topography of valleys and plateaus. They often find ancient fossils as they explore untrodden territory. Guests are welcome to take these home as a mementos.
We like to say that at Thornhill history has paused. Our cloudless evenings reveal crystal clear skies unpolluted by modern men. Stargazing here is as it was centuries ago - an awe inspiring pleasure. Likewise, all our drinking water is as pure and pristine as any Mother Nature ever created. Percolated through sedimentary rock strata for millions of years, it is a positive joy to taste. By the way, Thornhill is MALARIA FREE. No need to take those nasty pills...
For guests wishing to reflect on their adventures, Thornhill also provides a well stocked library and music room focused on the culture of South Africa and the Karoo.
Above all, Thornhill is a place of peace and tranquility. Come. Reconnect with your natural self.
Thornhill is one of the prime hunting properties in South Africa, and a limited number of hunts can be booked.
Our concept of hunting is, that when the hunt is over, and the rough day in the bush is behind, the hunter should be able to relax in comfortable luxury surroundings with fine wines and deluxe accommodation.
Without being, or wishing to sound arrogant, hunting at Thornhill is a special experience. This is not only our opinion, but that of many of you clients (who have ultimately become good friends). We have only limited spots available and do not give them up easily. We value like minded persons who love and respect nature. Because we do not have sufficient predators to keep our animal numbers down, culling to protect the land is a necessity. We do not like killers. We love a man who uses his hard won patience and skill to stalk ,and in an evenly matched contest, bests his beast.
If you are one of these, we would like to hear from you.
